Winner - John Hughes
JOHN
HUGHES was born in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, and studied music at Royal
Holloway College. He worked for a number of years in music retail, demonstrating
and selling pianos to the rich and famous in Harrods, and as a sales manager for
the keyboard division of Yamaha. He then worked for ten years in the giftware
industry, primarily as a magazine editor, researching and writing articles about
traditional British architectural styles, crafts and social history. He has also
worked in IT recruitment and most recently as a Data Quality Manager within the
NHS.
Musically John has been active as a keyboard player and
percussionist, mainly with the London Tijuana Showband, and as a freelance
arranger. In this capacity he has worked with Brian Kay, The Wren Orchestra, The
Muhlfeld Trio, Surrey Brass and individual members of the London Symphony and
Royal Philharmonic Orchestras.
John began composing seven years ago when challenged by a
friend to write an overture for a local amateur orchestra. This was followed by
his first major work, An English Requiem (dedicated to the memory of Rachel
Nickel) and a number of orchestral and piano works. He lives in Surrey and has
worked with various local musical groups. In May 2002 he won Surrey Brass’s
competition to compose a fanfare for the Golden Jubilee celebrations and in June
his overture "This Sceptred Isle" was premiered by the Woking Symphony
Orchestra.
John has just completed a clarinet concerto which will be
premiered by Victoria Soames Samek later in 2003. He has a number of projects in
the pipeline with Surrey Brass, including a possible audio-visual concert to
celebrate local pioneers of the British Film Industry.
