Kingstonian Wins
Bourne Band’s National Composer Contest
John Hughes from Kingston upon Thames has won the first Bourne Concert
Band of Woking’s nationwide composers contest, beating 15 other contestants
from as far away as Edinburgh to the award and £600 in prize money. His
composition for band is a medley of tunes based on theme songs from American TV
action series in the 1970s. It will now serve as the band’s signature tune.
The composition contest was in memory of David Allen, a young euphonium player
in band, who died tragically in a road accident in 2001. A fellow euphonium
player in the band described David as "a deep-voiced youth with a ready,
high-pitched laugh and a lively, amused enthusiasm for many things: his music,
physical activities and sports, engineering and railways – and many
friendships. Although his interests in engineering and railways took him away he
still, somehow, belonged to us, dropping in on Band practices when he
could."
The winning entry was chosen from eight finalists whose compositions were
test-run by the Band on February 9 at an all-day session at the Royal Military
School of Music at Kneller Hall in Twickenham. A judging panel and band members
voted on the entries, which ranged widely in style.
The Bourne band comprises musicians of all ages and walks of life. It has been
playing in the Woking area since 1984 and rehearses at the Darley Dene School,
Garfield Road, Addlestone on Tuesdays from 8:00 pm-10:00 pm. The band plays a
wide variety of music ranging from military marches to show tunes, light
classical and jazz compositions.
In recent years, the Band has been conducted by graduate music students at
Kneller Hall. The current conductor is James Marshall, who will graduate from
Kneller Hall in August.
The winning composition will be performed at the Band’s next concert on 22nd.
March at Christ Church in Woking. The theme of the concert is ‘Music to
Impress’ The concert begins at 7:30 pm and tickets are priced at £5 per
